Time: 6:30 pm

Monday, May 6, 6:30-8:30 pm (RH Johnson Social Hall) What’s all the screeching about, anyway? Why do they sing in some incomprehensible foreign language? And how come the guy with the low voice is always the villain, the guy with the high voice gets the girl, and the lady singing really high dies at the end? In this lively and informative talk using the piano, videos, audio recordings, and PowerPoint, Professor Schildkret looks at how operatic conventions arose from its history and how, despite all those silly formulas, opera can be one of the most rewarding experiences in the theater, if you go in with just a little knowledge. For cost and to register, go to www.rcscw.com and click on "Explore! Classes" or call Marie at 623/544-6194.

Time: 6:30 pm

Tuesday, May 7, 6:30-8:30 pm (RH Johnson Lecture Hall) The United States has had a close, strong relationship with Saudi Arabia for over 70 years, based on mutual political and economic interests. What are the factors contributing to this relationship and what consequences can we expect from it? What is this vast country really like? Hugh Renfro, a consultant and retired oil executive, has spent more than 20 years in Saudi Arabia. He will discuss the Saudi culture, the monarchy, the role of women in Saudi society and Saudi Arabia’s leap into the 21st century. He will also show his beautifully-photographed short film, Arabia, narrated by Helen Mirren. If you’ve ever wondered about this fascinating country, you don’t want to miss this presentation. 1. RCSCW PR says:

Hi Lin. Many of the classes are taught by our talented residents right here in Sun City West. The costs are designed to ensure the program is self-sustaining, rather than placing the burden on rec fees, so fees are assessed. These include an administrative fee to handle the online booking, a fee to cover the Rec Centers’ costs, and the instructor’s costs. We keep them as affordable as possible.

  2. R H Johnson is great. Mel & Sharom Bauck

  3. PS We are also wondering why the classes offered are so expensive? There must be a wealth of people right here in SCW that could speak on a variety of topics of interest without charging anything or at least not more than $5 per person. Even if there is a film shown seems like $5 pp should cover that cost?

  4. RCSCW PR says:

Stardust Theatre is presenting “Oklahoma.” Please call 623-584-7025 for further information.

  5. Nurith Loew says:

I would like to knoew if we still can get ticket for OKLAHOMA show.
    Where does it play ?
    Thanks Nurith.

  6. RCSCW PR says:

Hi Nancy. The Friends will hold a book sale for Friends’ members only from 9 am to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in the Social Hall. The public sale will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, in the Social Hall. If you have further questions, please call the Library at 623-544-6130.

  7. Nancy Matzke says:

I would like to know the date of the next book sale!

  8. My husband & I went to the Restoration Club Car Show on the 19th. Congratulations to all participating members/volunteers – this was one outstanding show! The best one we’ve attended in several years, so professionally run. We think the Restoration Club is a great idea and look forward to future events.

  9. RCSCW PR Assistant says:

Thanks for your inquiry, Jim. According to Automotive/Restoration Club President Herb Clark, the car show is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, in the R.H. Johnson Rec Center parking lot. (The show also features a car-part exchange, which we expect will be a popular attraction for car-restoration addicts.) Almost 40 trophies will be up for grabs at the show in different categories, and entries continue to be accepted. In addition to live entertainment, there also will be food available for purchase and raffles for various prizes. Monies raised at the event will go toward the club’s efforts to construct a permanent building for its members’ primary purpose, which is “to restore parts of history,” according to Clark.
We’ll round up more information soon but, in the meantime, feel free to call Club President Clark at 623-444-7778 if you would like more details.

  10. Jim Grenier says:

Have heard about car show on the 19th of Jan., but can
get no information on web site.
