Author Betty Webb

Author Betty Webb presents a book talk and signing at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28 in Summit Hall B of the Palm Ridge Recreation Center (13800 Deer Valley Dr. at Williams). Her entertaining book talks always include many writing tips.

Webb is the author of 15 national best-selling mystery novels (the dark Lena Jones books, such as “Desert Wives,” and “Desert Vengeance”; and the humorous Gunn Zoo books, “The Puffin of Death,” etc.). Before beginning to write full time, she worked as a journalist, interviewing everyone from U.S. presidents, astronauts who walked on the moon, Nobel Prize-winners, and polygamy runaways. Betty has taught creative writing at ASU and Phoenix College, and has been a nationally-syndicated book reviewer for more than 30 years. She is a member of the National Federation of Press Women, and Mystery Writers of America.

Her “Lena Jones” series is based on real crimes that have taken place in Arizona, such as the forced “marriages” of underage girls in polygamy compounds, and the growth in hate crimes. Her “Gunn Zoo” books were informed by the years Betty was a volunteer for the Phoenix Zoo; she has known and loved all the exotic animals she writes about.

Betty’s new mystery, “The Otter of Death,” will be released in early spring 2018, and features an otter who steals a cell phone, inadvertently snapping a pictures of a murder taking place. Weirdly enough, the book is based on a real-life event.
