Chamber hosts District 8 Congressional Candidate Forum in Sun City West

The Surprise Regional Chamber of Commerce will hold a Special Election Forum for District 8 Congressional Candidates on Saturday, Jan. 20, in Palm Ridge Recreation Center.

Candidates for the District 8 Congressional seat vacated by former Rep. Trent Franks have been invited to this forum. Franks’ resignation created a rare and instantaneous scramble for this important seat. The field is expected to be crowded for this race, with a special primary election scheduled Feb. 27, and a general election slated April 24.

The forum is free and open to the public. It is the first public meeting debuting the candidates. It will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in Summit Hall A at Palm Ridge, 13800 W. Deer Valley Drive, Sun City West. Glen Hamer, president and CEO of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce, will serve as moderator, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will be in attendance.

Candidates will be presented in alphabetical order and allowed a one-minute self-introduction. The forum will continue with questions prepared by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Arizona Chamber of Commerce, and the Surprise Regional of Commerce.

Raoul Sada, president and CEO of the Surprise Regional Chamber of Commerce, said the forum would follow the chamber’s typical format. It will not be a debate, and there will be no interaction among candidates or with the audience. Only the moderator will be allowed to interact with candidates. As with all chamber forums, there will be no “winner” declared.

“We sponsor candidate forums because we believe engaging citizens, local businesses and other key community stakeholders in the health, education, and economic outcomes are critical to building healthy communities,” said Mr. Sada.

Great! A good way to get to know the candidates a bit better and hence make a better decision when voting.

  2. Marie Nelson says:

Glad all candidates being invited. Look forward to hearing their views on the economy and immigration.

  3. Pat Gotelaere says:

Why isn’t the Surprise Chamber of Commerce providing the 2 democratic candidates who are running for office? Wouldn’t it be fair and interesting to provide a bipartisan forum?? I realized this is Surprise chamber of commerce so please pass this question on!!

  4. To clarify, not all candidates are invited to participate as the previous commenter suggested. The event will feature several Republican candidates. Democratic candidates were not invited to participate.

  5. Thank you for the question Pat. We will share it with the Chamber.

  6. Thank you for your comment, Lynne. You are correct. For any additional information on the forum, please contact the chamber at 623-583-0692.
