Miss Kitty to Jean Harlow

November 15 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

MISS KITTY TO JEAN HARLOW, AZ Women Who Won the West, 3:00 to 5:00 pm, Wednesday, November 15, RH Johnson Lecture Hall; $10 fee. (7019)

Not all the women of the Wild West were like the ones portrayed in movies and TV. Some were even wilder, and many were more like saints. From 1846 to 1946 and later, Arizona boasted not just dance hall girls and brothel owners, but a woman stage robber, several murderesses, movie stars, lawyers, architects, aviators, and even a woman steamboat captain. Arizona history is full of celebrities as well, from Jean Harlow to Tucson’s own Linda Ronstadt. Hear the stories of Arizona women who won the West.

Instructor Jim Turner recently retired from the Arizona Historical Society where he worked with more than 70 museums in every corner of the state. He is co-author of the 4th-grade textbook, The Arizona Story, and his pictorial history book, Arizona: Celebration of the Grand Canyon State, contains more than 530 images. He recently updated the third edition of Native Roads, a motoring guide to Hopi and Navajo Lands. Jim moved to Tucson in 1951, earned a master’s degree in U.S. history from the University of Arizona, and has been researching and teaching Arizona history for more than 35 years.
