Hickory golf tournament attracts international crowd
Bringing back the tradition of hickory shafted golf clubs, a record 74 players from around the United States, Canada and even Johannesburg, South Africa, competed at Pebblebrook Golf Course in this year’s Arizona Desert Hickory Tournament. Outfits from the era added to the fun.
The tournament supported a field for Championship, Senior, New to Hickory, Super Senior, and Lady Players. The weather offered perfect Arizona sunshine and temperatures in the 70s, creating a great winter getaway for our guests from the north.
Matt Stovall of Buckeye was the overall Tournament Champion, shooting 75/76. Steve Simer of Cave Creek was runner up and was not far behind, shooting 76/78. Stovall, a relatively new hickory player, delivered consistent shot making and had the advantage of his 10-year-old daughter, Rylee, as his caddie.
The Senior Division ended in a tie, with a score card playoff awarding the win to Hugh Cameron of Corunna, Ontario, Canada. In second place was last year’s Senior Champion, Jeff Simonson of Sun City West, also shooting a 148 two-day total.
The New to Hickory Division winner was Mark Timms of Scottsdale with 79/74, and the Super Senior Division was won by John Mabry of Phoenix with 76/73. The Ladies Division also finished in a tie between Donna Richmond and Pam Rowland, both of Sun City West. However, Richmond prevailed as the champion in the scorecard playoff.
Next year’s tournament will be Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 24-25, 2018, with practice rounds available Friday, Feb. 23. For information, contact Ken Holtz at email@example.com. For information about hickory golf, visit hickorygolfers.com.
