Independent accepting Hometown Heroes nominations

Awards, special section slated

The Sun City West Independent and the Daily News-Sun, in partnership with the Recreation Centers of Sun City West, want to publicly recognize the residents who do so much good in Sun City West and the West Valley.

Independent Newsmedia will present a Hometown Heroes special section in the Sun City West Independent, as well as an awards ceremony in conjunction with the Rec Centers’ Board Workshop 9 a.m. Feb. 22 in the R.H. Johnson Recreation Center Lecture Hall, 19803 R.H. Johnson Blvd.

Winners will be honored with a profile in the newspaper on why they were chosen as a Hometown Hero as well as receive a thank you gift.

Categories include:

  • Community — A person who has donated his or her time or has done something to improve the community.
  • Business — An organization or group of people that have undertaken a project to help others.
  • Mentor/Coach — A person who has made a dramatic impact in the life of another.
  • Emergency Responder — A person who steps forward during an emergency to help.
  • Faith/Spiritual — A person who makes an impact in their religious community.
  • Youth Cheerleader — A member of the community who has found a special way to brighten the day of the younger generation.
  • Educator — A teacher, current or retired, who has found ways to inspire students beyond their own expectations.
  • Lifetime Achievement — A long-standing community member who has consistently and tirelessly stepped forward and exemplified a passion for giving.

A small committee will review the nominations and select a Hometown Hero for each category.

Residents and business stakeholders are invited to submit about 250-500 words on why their nomination should be recognized. Deadline for submissions is Feb. 10, 2018.
