Mindfulness class offered in Sun City West

If stress is getting the better of you, the Recreation Centers of Sun City West’s EXPLORE! program has an upcoming class that may be just what you need.

“Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction” will begin on Sept. 21 and includes eight weekly classes from 3 to 5:30 p.m., as well as a seven-hour retreat to be held as the final session. The fee for this class is $175.

The class is just one offered through the EXPLORE! program, which offers courses on a broad variety of interests for West Valley adults. The fall catalog may be picked up at any Recreation Centers of Sun City West facility. The class schedule can also be found online at suncitywest.classtrackonline.com.

The “Mindfulness” course is an intensive class meant to relieve stress and improve health for people with chronic illnesses or conditions, based on the teaching and research of Jon Kabat-Zinn. The MBSR program is designed to teach mindfulness skills through meditation, mindful movement exercises, inquiry and lecture presentations.

Research has demonstrated that participants gain the following benefits from using the skills learned and practiced in the MBSR program: improved ability to manage chronic pain; increased sleep, clarity, focus, and sense of well-being; and lowered blood pressure, heart rate, stress levels, and anxiety.

Please note, the instructor will speak with each participant before the class begins to determine if it is a good fit, and to answer any questions. There are only a few slots left so register soon.

Signing up for EXPLORE! classes is simple. Register in person at the R.H. Johnson Rec Center Administrative Office at 19803 R.H. Johnson Blvd. from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday; or check out the complete class schedule at suncitywest.classtrackonline.com and sign up there.

Program coordinator Tamra Stark is available to answer your questions or help you with registration at 623-544-6194 or tamra.stark@suncitywest.com.

  1. The class sounds really great. One problem, Banner Sun Health Research Institute offers a class for 6 weeks, 2hr each class for $25.00. Explore class is twice as long but at SEVEN TIME the cost at $175. Explore needs to get in the game and take a hard look at their prices…these classes should not be a money maker for anyone.

  2. Hi Mike. Thanks for your comments. We do research area classes so that we don’t duplicate efforts. If you can tell us more about where you see this Sun Health class listed, we would appreciate it. The only classes we have found have been one or two hour, single-session classes. The one we are offering is much more comprehensive. Our fees are set to cover the costs of the instructor and minor miscellaneous administrative costs. They are not designed to be huge money makers.

I signed up for this class with two friends. It was terrible. With some MBSR experience and years of clinical experience, I thought there was a possibility that I was reacting to some inner aversion and it was me and not the class. So I researched and found a man that had been teaching mindfulness for 38 years. He confirmed my impression that this teacher was sorely lacking. Both of my friends had years working in an addiction treatment center and felt the same way. We all dropped out at 4 weeks. Two others dropped out before us. Obviously, I don’t know how many dropped out after we left.

I began another class from the beginning and can’t even describe how wonderful it is. This class is currently taught by Lisa Baillard. If they change instructors, one should consider it.

I am only submitting this review, because I feel it is a moral responsibility to protect those who come after us and cannot afford to spend this kind of money, only to walk away.

Good morning Dana, thank you for the time you took to write, we do appreciate it. I will pass all of your comments along to the appropriate people in the Explore! Adult Learning department. Have a great weekend.
